Chairman of ship-breaking association resigns after Gadani fire

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Chairman of Ship-breaking Yard Association, Rizwan Deewan has resigned from his post on Saturday after a fire that erupted in a ship docked there for scrap claimed 21 lives and dozens went missing.

Fire that erupted earlier this week was put up after four days of struggle by fire fighters.

A case was lodged at a local police station where statements of different persons concerned were recorded including that of Rizwan Deewan.

In his statement, former chairman of the association said that the administration and owner of the ship were among those who should be held responsible.

Over lack of evidence, Rizwan was freed by the police however, he has been instructed to make his presence sure whenever needed in the probe.

Reportedly, breaking the metal for scrap and cleaning process was carried on simultaneously by the owner and contractor which caused the fire.
