Shipbreaking worker killed in accident

A shipbreaking worker was killed after falling from the lift shaft while working in the yard in Chittagong yesterday afternoon.

The deceased was Nuruddin, 26, son of Jamal Ullah, of Nonabil under Sitakunda upazila. He was working at Mishmak Ship Breaking Yard at Chhoto Kumira, Chittagong.

Sources said Nuruddin suddenly slipped and fell on the floor from the shaft of a ship where he was unplugging the cables around 1.00pm.

Seriously injured Nuruddin was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the doctors declared him dead around an hour later, said Mrinal Chakma of CMCH Police Outpost.

It was the seventh accident in the shipbreaking yards this year and a total of seven people have been killed.

At least 11 workers died in similar accidents in the yards last year, sources said.
