Worker killed in Chittagong shipbreaking yard:

A worker died after a large iron plate fell on him at a shipbreaking yard at Bhatiari in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong early yesterday.

The victim Md Khorshed Alam, 20, worked at SRS Ship Breaking Yard and hailed from Kotapara in Sitakunda upazila.

Inspector (Investigation) Aminul Islam of Sitakunda Police Station said Khorshed was seriously injured around 4:00am. He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead, the inspector added.

Contacted over the telephone, yard owner Abdullah Al Mamun, also the son of Awami League lawmaker Abul Kashem Master, told The Daily Star that he was in the capital and knew nothing about the accident. He said no one worked during such ungodly hours at his yard.

It was the fourth accident at shipbreaking yards this year in which four people died.

At least 11 workers had died in similar accidents in shipbreaking yards last year, sources said.
