Green Ship Recycling: GMS

GMS, the world’s leading buyer of ships for recycling, has been an ardent proponent of green ship recycling.  GMS is the only cash buyer in the world that has been part of the deliberations leading to IMO’s “Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009”.

Thanks to our 18 year history, exposure to international markets, shipping laws/regulations, close working relations with various governmental and non-governmental agencies, a rich experienced staff with a background combining technical, legal, management and financed with a compined experience of more than 75 years, GMS has found itself in an inherent position to successfully construct and executed “Green Ship Recycling Program” (GSRP).

Under the program, both ship owners and ship yards stand to benefit from GMS’s experience and its versatile team. The program offers ship owners the benefit of selling their ships to a globally acknowledged Cash Buyer (GMS) who would provide best market value for their ships and a ship recycling process carried out in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

The company has invested considerable resources into ”green recycling” and continues to support ship recycling yard in both advisory and financial capacity. Recently, with technical assistance of GMS, 4 ship recycling yards in Bangladesh were able to get ISO Certifications for ISO 9001, 14001, 18001 and 30,000.

The GMS GSRP has been created for the seamless implementation of Safe and Environmentally Sound ship recycling guidelines developed by the IMO’s Hong Kong Convention. The program is designed to take green recycling, under the IMO guidelines, to ANY part of the world.

The GMS GSRP offers the geographic flexibility and choice in ship recycling which the worldwide shipping industry demands today. This is unlike other green ship recycling programs, some of which have ceased to exist for the market as a result of their myopic vision and restrictive geographic offerings. New green ship recycling programs are emerging which are following the GMS model but lack the value, depth, experience and know how that GMS offers to ship owners.

The GMS GSRP is designed to address the needs of the most demanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs of the leading ship owners of the world and to mitigate the risk of potential legal action against the owners.

The program offers the BEST combination of cost effective practical solutions without sacrificing superior quality and at a fraction of the cost of what a comparable program would cost anywhere else.

Most importantly, it is in compliance with the guidelines established not only by the IMO’s Hong Kong Convention, but also by;
  • International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO)
  • International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
  • International Association of Dry Cargo Ship owners (INTERCARGO)
  • Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO)
  • International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)
  • International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF)
  • Oil Companies’ International Marine Forum (OCIMF)
  • International Parcel Tankers Association (IPTA)
  • International Association of Classification Societies Ltd. (IACS)
The GMS GSRP offers all of the above, at a fraction of the cost of what a comparable program would cost anywhere else. Now, ship owners can meet their CSR and legal responsibilities without breaking the bank…and feel good in the process!!
