'Separate wage structure for ship-breaking workers soon'

Members of the parliamentary standing committee on Labour and Employment Ministry today said that a separate wage structure would be announced for the workers of the shipbreaking yards soon considering the health hazards they are exposed to.

The parliamentary watchdog will make recommendation to the ministry concerned within 15 days to protect the interest of the workers, said Israfil Alam MP after visiting four shipbreaking yards at Sitakunda.

"Health hazards the workers are exposed to while working in the shipbreaking yards will be considered in the recommendations. A guideline will also be formulated for the shipbreaking industry soon," he said.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian, local MP ABM Abul Kashem, senior employees from the concerned ministries and a number of shipbreakers were present on the occasion.

The team also visited the shipbreaking workers' hospital, financed by the shipyard owners, at Bhatiary near the shipbreaking zone of Sitakunda.

60 shipbreaking yards out of 125 along the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal have acquired clearance from the environment department for beaching scrap ships while only 12 are in operation.
