He was speaking at a meet-the-press talk organised by Shipping and Communications Reporters Forum at the National Press Club.
“Over a lakh workers are engaged with the shipbreaking industry. But there are complexities here, and this is due to the environmentalists,” the shipping minister told the reporters, as legal moves by greens put the sectors activities at a grinding halt.
He said, “Due to problems facing shipbreaking yards the construction sector has directly been affected.”
The minister pointed out that every attempt to impose control over the shipbreaking industry resulted in price spirals of iron rods, an important construction material. “So, we must have to think how we could go forward without hampering the industry,” he said.
However, the country has made a remarkable development in shipbuilding industry, the minister remarked and said, “Like RMG we also have a bright future in the shipbuilding industry.”
The shipping minister said, “The countries from where we once imported ships are now showing interest in getting ships from us.”
He mentioned the name of Denmark and Germany in the West.
Different shipbuilding institutions are now working on building more than a hundred ships being ordered by such countries, Shahjahan Khan informed the meet.
The shipping minister also mentioned the development activities taken by the ministry during the tenure of present government.
Among others, SCRF president Anisur Rahman Khan and general secretary Rafiqul Islam Sabuj spoke on the occasion.
