SITAKUNDA BLAST: HC summons Sitakunda OC

The High Court has summoned the officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station to explain the reason behind the delay in submitting the final investigation report (FIR) on the explosion at Chittagong ship-breaking yard.

The bench of justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain on Sunday passed the order asking Nur Mohammad to be present before it on Mar 6.

The court also ordered Abul Kashem Master, owner of Mack International Corporation, where a deadly explosion took place on Jan 18, to be present on the same day. Four people were killed on the shipyard while cutting a scrap ship.

On Jan 19, the High Court issued a contempt of court rule against the company and summoned its owner.

Lawyers of Kashem on behalf of him sought apology before the court on Sunday but the court did not pay heed to it.

The court also ordered submission of the autopsy reports of the deceased and the probe report by the Chittagong Port Authority within the same timeline.

"Greed must not cross the limit. Human being should not be used as goods or beast," the court remarked referring to the ship owners who have caught up in the business.

Deputy attorney general A B M Altaf Hossain stood for the state, while Iqbal Kabir Liton for Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers' Association (BELA) during the hearing.
