UNDP to back labour-intensive industries in Bangladesh:

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has expressed its interest to provide all types of support for the labour-intensive and environment-friendly industries of Bangladesh.

Country Director of the UNDP Stefan Priesner disclosed the interest while delivering his speech at a presentation workshop on 'Strategic assistance activities of the UNDP' at the conference room of ministry of industries Sunday where Industries Minister Dilip Barua was present as the chief guest.

Mr Priesner said the UNDP is ready to give all types of support to the environment-friendly and labour-intensive industries of Bangladesh. He also assured its readiness to support the implementation of the National Industry Policy-2010, creating working environment for all in the industries.

Dilip Barua urged the UNDP to provide support for establishing a training institute in Bangladesh for the development of country's manpower. He also emphasised the need for setting up a shipbreaking institute here to ensure an environment-friendly shipbreaking and recycling industry.

Representatives of Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC), Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC), Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (BITAC), Bangladesh Credit Board and Ministry of Industries were present at the programme.

Other speakers at the programme emphasised need-based project implementation. Assistant Country Director of the UNDP Md Tarik-ul-Islam presented the key-note paper at the programme while Industries Secretary K H Masud Siddiqui conducted it.
