Shipowners are still sending old ships to
South Asia to be broken down, despite an increased awareness of the dangers to
workers. This report from Fathom News claims that between July and September
there was one fatality at Alang Yard in India, while another worker was
seriously injured in Chittagong.
The report claims that of the 227 ships scrapped
in the third quarter, 124 ended up on South Asia beaches, primarily from owners
in Greece, South Korea and Singapore.
