Washington – OSHA has updated its National
Emphasis Program on shipbreaking operations as part of a Memorandum of
Agreement with several federal agencies.
Along with the Department of the Navy, the
U.S. Maritime Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, OSHA
agreed in 2015 to work together on safety and health inspections of government
vessels that are being recycled. The NEP also focuses on reducing injuries and
illnesses among Spanish-speaking workers, who are employed in high numbers in
the shipbreaking industry.
The updated NEP replaces one issued in 2010,
and will remain in effect until canceled or superseded by another instruction.
