Kozhikode: A stop memo has been issued to the SILK's ship
breaking unit at Beypore by Kozhikode district administration. A team headed by
deputy commissioner, disaster management and DMO officials yesterday held
discussions with the protest members and SILK representatives and issued the
stop memo after they found certain documents missing regarding the ownership
details of the ship brought for breaking.
“We have given directions to SILK to produce the documents.
They have told us that they will give us the documents and we will take a final
decision after studying them. Till then a temporary stop memo has been issued
banning any ship breaking activity at the unit,” Deputy Collector, disaster
management, K V Muraleedharan told DC. Meanwhile, the SILK authorities claimed
that vested interests are trying to raise baseless allegations against the unit
and are not coming forward to check the facilities available at the unit.
The public living in the area have raised issues of
environmental pollution and health hazards caused by the unit and had
complained to the district administration.
