In St. Mary Parish, the navy's decommissioned USS Merrimack is now docked in Amelia where it will be recycled.
The 32-year-old ship was built in New Orleans and used in the "Atlantic fleet." Tugs towed the 708-foot-long naval vessel from Virginia. This is just one of several Southern Recycling Yards the US Maritime administration qualified to recycle government assets.
Crews are removing hazardous material from the ship and once that's done, they'll start removing the metal.
The process is expected to take several months.
