At its 7th General Meeting in Dubai, the
Netherlands based International Ship Recycling Association (ISRA) members
underlined the importance of meeting European Union Ship Recycling
requirements.
The new EU Regulation aims to mandatorily
enforce EU flagged ships to only use environmentally sound recycling yards and
ISRA will prepare its members to be listed as approved yards.
ISRA chairman, Turkish recycler Adem Simsek
said: “Our customers more and more require certified yards. Therefore we will
push our members to update their facilities in line with European requirements.
Not only infrastructure but also management systems will be high on the
agenda.”
With its ten members, ISRA offers more than
sufficient capacity to dismantle the number of EU ships phased out annually, in
an environmentally sound and safe manner.
