7 shipbreaking yards fined:

Seven shipbreaking yards in Chittagong have been fined a total of Tk 34.80 lakh for not complying with 56 conditions of Environment Clearance Certificate.

Monowar Islam, director general of the Department of Environment (DoE), awarded the fine at a hearing at the port city on Thursday.

Owners and representatives of the companies attended the hearing in response to a summons issued by the DoE, reports our correspondent in Chittagong.

United Ship Recycling Ltd was fined Tk 6.50 lakh, Shima Steel Tk 7 lakhs, Mamun Steel Tk 5.50 lakh, Mahin Enterprise Tk 3.30 lakh, Al Safa Stee Millsl Ltd Tk 3.50 lakh, KSB Steel Tk 2.50 lakh and Sayeed Steel Tk 6.50 lakh, Monowar said at a press conference.

Besides, Mamun Steel was asked to halt scraping of ships until further order and to remove two scrapped ships from Sitakunda shipbreaking yards, the DG told reporters after the hearing at the DoE Chittagong office.

Earlier on Tuesday, the DoE summoned the seven owners seeking explanations as to why they had not fulfilled the conditions mentioned in the Environment Clearance Certificate.
