Jairam Ramesh Asks Report on Probo Koala at Alang Shipbreaking Yard:

New Delhi (ABC Live): India’s Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday has ordered a fact finding report from Gujarat on a toxic ship, Probo Koala at Alang Shipbreaking Yard.

Information and confirmation to this effect was made by Jairam Ramesh himself when asked on the issue toxic ship that ,"Yes, I have asked the state Government for a factual report," he told the news agency when asked about reports that the ship is headed for Alang Ship Breaking Yard in Gujarat after being banned in Bangladesh.

Quoting a global group of activists called 'NGO Shipbreaking Platform', the reports said the toxic-laden ship, Probo Koala, was built in 1989 and it has been now named Gulf Jash.

According to reports, environmentalists claim that the ship contains many tonnes of hazardous asbestos, PCBs, toxic paints, fuel and chemical residues which have not been cleaned up before sending the ship for dismantling
