Operation to salvage grounded ship MV Wisdom put off:

The operation to sail the grounded ship MV Wisdom from Mumbai's Juhu beach to Alang in Gujarat was postponed for about a fortnight now, offiicials said on Sunday.

The ship was on its way from Colombo to Alang shipbreaking yard in Gujarat for dismantling, when its engine failed.and later ran aground off the Juhu beach.

After some abortive moves to tug it away, the operation has been deferred till next spring tide.

The Directorate General of Shipping in a statement said due to engine trouble in the lead tug there are operational constraints in taking up salvage efforts.

"The efforts are therefore abandoned till next spring tide after a fortnight, when attempt to refloat the vessel would be made afresh. There is no apprehension of any oil or cargo related pollution.

"Public and press is requested to keep well clear of the vessel for their own safety and to allow salvers to retrieve their equipment and function without any hindrance," the statement said.

The Indian Navy faced trouble on Friday while conducting an operation to salvage the cargo ship.

Reports said a cable that was to link the 9000-ton vessel to a tug-boat snapped on Friday and due to high tide, it could not be re-laid.

Naval helicopters on Friday dropped steel cables, tug and other salvage equipment on the ship to pull it out.

Director General of Shipping Satish Agnihotri said the ship does not pose any environmental threat.

There is no oil or cargo on the ship. So currently, it does not pose environmental risks,” Agnihotri said.

Onlookers in large number are gathering at the Juhu beach to have a look at the ship.

Even actor Amitabh Bachchan has tweeted on the ship.
