An Era of Change:

HERE are two vessels in Barrow port with very different futures. The Goliath (main picture) is a sturdy jack-up installation barge working for Dong Energy on the £1bn Walney Offshore Windfarm.

It is owned by geotechnical company GoSea of Belgium, which has a fleet of such specialist vessels which can work on various tasks, from drilling.

The Goliath to transport 300 tonne steel transition pieces from the dockside at Barrow out to sea and then install them on top of the steel foundation piles for new wind turbines.

Goliath has worked on both phases of the project Walney 1 and now Walney 2.

The jack-up vessels, which can put down their legs and work securely even in quite high seas, are much in demand.

A sister vessel the Vagant has also worked in the windfarm. By contrast a vessel no longer in demand at Barrow is the Pacific Sandpiper (inset).

After years of plying the oceans between Barrow and Japan and other places, the Sandpiper has been sidelined by Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd, which in turn is part of International Nuclear Services.

The vessel is soon expected to be towed away to Europe for scrapping ending and era and following the path of the Pacific Crane, Pacific Swan, Pacific Teal and the European Shearwater.

The 104m long vessel was built in 1985.

INS says it is examining whether work can be found for the last working old ship Pacific Pintai. If not, it will share the same fate.
