Chittagong April 22: State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Munnujan Sufian and Israfil Alam, chief of a parliamentary committee, on Friday visited 13 shipbreaking yards in Sitakunda of Chittagong.

“The committee will prepare a comprehensive report highlighting workers’ health, safety and working environment and submit to the government within 15 days,” said Israfil, head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Ministry.

The government will define a policy on the basis of the report and declare an individual wage board for the workers of this industry, he told The Daily Star.

Israfil said only 12 out of 125 shipbreaking yards are running because of a High Court ban and about 1 lakh workers are suffering due to the closure and the government will consider the future of the industry and the workers.
