Firefighters were told an errant cut made during the dismantling of the SS Solon Turman at Allied Defense Recycling might have deposited slag into the ship's 3,600-square-foot fuel tank, fire department spokesman Bill Tweedy said.
The tank still contained some fuel, Tweedy said. No flames were seen, but a small amount of smoke and elevated carbon dioxide levels on the ship were detected, Tweedy said.
Firefighters injected 2,000 cubic feet of inert and non-flammable carbon dioxide and argon gas into the fuel tank, Tweedy said.
The gas displaced the oxygen in the tank and made the environment safe, Tweedy said.
Allied Defense Recycling planned to keep a watch over the ship through tomorrow to be sure the fire does not rekindle, Tweedy said.
The Solon Turman, a general cargo ship built in 1961, was relocated from the mothballed fleet in Suisun Bay to Mare Island in February for dismantling.
