National committee formed to formulate integrated policy for Bangladesh Shipbreaking industry:

The government has formed two bodies – National Committee and Technical Committee – to formulate an integrated policy for ship-breaking industry for flourishing the sector protecting environment and ensuring workers’ safety.

Industries Minister Dilip Barua will lead the national committee comprising representatives from all stakeholders including environment, shipping and law ministries, Bangladesh Coastguard and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (BELA).

Additional secretary ABM Khorshed Alam has been made head of the technical committee which will help the national committee in formulating the policy.

Industries Minister Dilip Barua announced it at an inter-ministerial meeting on ship-breaking and ship-recycling industry at Shilpabhaban on Monday.

Industries Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, representatives from shipping, environment, finance ministries and Bangladesh Bank were present.

Barua said the government wants to see the transparent flourish of the sector and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the growth of the sector through protecting environment and ensuring safety of the workers involved in it.

“It’s our new beginning. We’re moving towards formulation of a comprehensive, transparent and environment-friendly policy,” he said.

The Minister said options would be there for inclusion of fresh members after finalizing the work description of the committees.

He said after formulation of the policy it would be placed in the cabinet for its approval.

The government officials representing different ministries and government agencies put forward their suggestions in the meeting for sustainable development of the ship-breaking industry and environment-friendly recycling of ships. 

They suggested for taking lessons from neighboring countries like India, China and Sri Lanka who have developed environment-friendly ship-breaking industry.  They mentioned that Bangladesh is the second largest ship-breaking country in the world.

They attached importance to attainting economic advancement through flourishing the sector.

They emphasized on building dry-dock for ship-recycling, introduction of one-stop service center and waste storage and management system and breaking ship following docking system.

Later, The Industries Minister held a meeting with the leaders of ship-breaking association and sought proposals from them in formulating a comprehensive policy.
