Mare Island welcomes cargo ship for dismantling:

Mare Island will welcome Tuesday the second federally owned cargo ship set for dismantling there.

The SS President is one of two contracts awarded to ship recyclers Allied Defense Recycling by the federal Maritime Administration late last year. The ships were built in the 1960s, and have long resided as "mothball ships" in the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet.

Both the SS President and its predecessor, the SS Solon Turman - which arrived early last month, are due to be dismantled by November for a total cost of $3.1 million.

Weather and other factors permitting, the President is expected at Dry Dock 2 by 2:30 p.m., Allied Defense Recycling officials said.
